They come to you first.
San Rafaelito, Espíritu Santo Island. Mexico's most authentic sea lion swim.
At San Rafaelito, a colony of hundreds of sea lions has gone generations without fearing humans. When you get in the water, you don't go looking for them — they come to you, circle around you, look you in the eye, and play inches from your face.
There's no way to prepare for that. You just have to experience it.
What happens in the water
San Rafaelito's sea lions are naturally curious. The younger ones are the most playful — they swim up, spin around you, and "inspect" you with a confidence that surprises everyone the first time.
Swimming is unstructured and always guided in the water. Animals are never touched — this is their habitat, and the rules exist so this keeps existing.
Our guides have spent years in these waters and know exactly how to move so the experience feels natural for you and respectful of the colony.
Where and when
San Rafaelito is an islet inside the Espíritu Santo Island Protected Natural Area, a 45-minute boat ride from La Paz. The colony is there year-round — what changes is the access season.
| Season | Condition |
|---|---|
| Sep–May | Swimming available · clear water · colony active |
| Jun–Aug | Breeding season · swimming not permitted · boat viewing only |
Our recommendation: October to January. Colder water, but visibility is exceptional and the colony is at its liveliest.
How it fits into the tour
Swimming with sea lions is part of the Espíritu Santo Island Tour — it isn't a standalone activity. The San Rafaelito stop is the first on the route and usually the one people remember most.
The tour also includes reef snorkeling, lunch on a pristine beach, and multiple stops at coves around the island. Total duration: 5 to 6 hours.
Also available as a private tour — exclusive boat, itinerary built around you.
Includes: round-trip transportation from your hotel · certified bilingual guide · snorkel gear and wetsuit · CONANP permit · ceviche, sandwich, water and soft drinks · travel insurance.
A note on respecting the wildlife
San Rafaelito's sea lions are wild. They aren't trained or used to being fed by visitors — they're simply used to humans coexisting with them. That's exactly what we want to preserve.
That's why we only operate with certified guides, inside the Protected Natural Area, under official CONANP permits. Because the only way this experience keeps existing is by doing it right.
"We saw so many dolphins, swam with sea lions, learned about protected beaches, and spotted a blue-footed booby. Unforgettable."
"The sea lions are incredible. They come right up to you — it was the best part of the trip."
