La Paz Cruise Port: What Fits in Your Shore Day

La Paz Cruise Port: What Fits in Your Shore Day

If you arrive in La Paz by cruise ship, your day isn't set by the itinerary — it's set by your all-aboard time. We're La Paz City Map, locals based here, and we book tours for cruise passengers every season. This is what we tell each of them before selling anything: what actually fits in a shore day, which activities run on fixed hours nobody can move, and why a private tour is almost always the right call when you came in on a ship.

The three clocks you don't control

Clock Who sets it Why it matters to you
Your re-boarding time Your cruise line The ship doesn't wait. The hour that matters is all aboard, not departure
Whale shark time slots CONANP Entry hours into the protected area are assigned, not chosen
Balandra entry shifts CONANP 8:00 am–12:00 pm and 1:00–5:00 pm, with a visitor cap per shift

What we can't guarantee

If you book a full-day tour — Isla Espíritu Santo or whale shark — on a cruise call, we can't guarantee you'll be back at the port in time. That isn't legal boilerplate, it's the sea. Conditions on the water and the port authority decide what time a boat comes back, not us and not the captain.

So when you write to us from a ship, the first thing we ask is your exact all-aboard time. If the numbers don't work, we'll say so and offer something that does. We'd rather sell you less than watch you sprint down the pier.

Whale shark swims run on assigned time slots

The authorized season runs October through April, and the viewing area is regulated by CONANP: the number of boats and the entry hours are assigned by slot. Booking a private boat gives you the whole vessel — fewer people in the water, the guide to yourself — and it gives you something more useful on a shore day: you decide when to turn around. What it doesn't do is hand you a different slot. The slot is the slot.

That's exactly why private is the only format that makes a slot workable inside a port call. On a shared boat you come back when the group comes back. On a private one you can take the slot you're given, swim, and head straight back the moment your clock says so. We never guarantee sightings — this is a wild animal in open water, and if conditions don't allow the swim, we reschedule.

Season details are in our whale shark guide, and the month-by-month picture of the destination is in our season calendar.

Balandra opens at 8:00 am, and it fills

Two shifts, a visitor cap on each, and a conservation wristband booked through CONANP's official portal. If your ship puts you ashore after 8:00 am, the morning shift has already started without you; the afternoon shift can run straight into your re-boarding time. And the drive adds up — Balandra is roughly 30 minutes from downtown La Paz, plus the time from the pier. Everything you need is in our Balandra Beach guide.

What your cruise line may restrict

Some cruise lines sell certain activities on board only and don't allow you to book them independently; others don't restrict anything. It varies by line, by itinerary and by season, and we have no way of knowing it for you. Check at your ship's shore excursion desk before you book anything.

And if your cruise line doesn't allow booking something independently, don't book it independently. Whatever you'd save isn't worth the problem on board.

Why private, and what private actually solves

A shared tour leaves when it suits the group and returns when it suits the group. A private tour leaves when it suits you, moves at your pace, and — the part that matters most on a shore day — turns around when you need it to. It also doesn't depend on enough other people booking the same date.

For a cruise call that isn't a luxury. It's the only way to control the one thing you're short of, which is time.

What private does solve: departure time, return time, pace, how many stops you make, and who decides.
What private doesn't solve: the CONANP slots, the weather, or the real length of a full day at the island.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do Isla Espíritu Santo on a cruise call?
Only with a long port call, and only accepting that the return time depends on the sea. It's a full day.

Does a private whale shark tour get me a custom time?
No. It gets you the whole boat and the freedom to head back when you need to. The entry slot is assigned by CONANP.

Can I make it to Balandra if I disembark at 9:00 am?
The morning shift has already begun. The afternoon shift would have to be checked against your all-aboard time.

Can I book tours outside the ship?
It depends on your cruise line. Confirm at the shore excursion desk on board before booking anything.

What happens if the tour runs late and I miss the ship?
Getting back on board is the passenger's responsibility. That's exactly why we plan from your all-aboard time, not the departure time.
