##### Table of content

## The Gulf holds more life than any guide can promise in advance.

*No two days are the same. No captain can tell you exactly what you will see. That is precisely the point.*

La Ventana sits about 40 minutes southeast of La Paz, on a bay better known for its wind and its kiteboarding season. What fewer visitors know is that the same stretch of water — between the village and Isla Cerralvo — is one of the richest corners of the **Gulf of California** for marine life.

On a single half-day run you may snorkel beside mobula rays moving in schools of hundreds, follow dolphins in open water and, depending on the season, find yourself in front of humpback or blue whales. The ocean decides what appears. That unpredictability is the experience, not a flaw in it.

### What you can see, by season

The waters around La Ventana and Isla Cerralvo combine abundance, diversity and genuine unpredictability. Depending on the month, the sea offers something different.

| Season | Main wildlife |
| --- | --- |
| **Mar–Jun** | Mobula rays in large schools · orcas following them |
| **Nov–Mar** | Humpback whales · blue whales · sperm whales in transit |
| **Jul–Oct** | Clearest water of the year · dolphins · sea lions · sea turtles |
| **Year-round** | Bottlenose dolphins · sea lions · sea turtles |

**On orcas:** sightings have become more frequent around La Ventana, especially in spring and summer when orcas follow the mobula schools. When it happens, it is observed from the boat and always under the guide's direction — it is one of the most striking encounters the Gulf of California offers, and it is never scheduled.

For a month-by-month view of the whole destination, see our [La Paz season calendar](https://lapazcitymap.com/blog/best-time-to-visit-la-paz?hsLang=en).

### Isla Cerralvo — the island Cousteau put on the map

The route includes navigation around Isla Cerralvo, also known as Isla Jacques Cousteau: reefs, cleaning stations where giant rays gather, and pelagic life that turns up when least expected. The trip ends with a snack on the shore of Isla Cerralvo or at Playa Punta Arenas, depending on the day's conditions.

### Why La Ventana and not La Paz

La Paz has its own ocean safaris, and they are excellent. La Ventana has one thing in addition: the mobula concentration from March to June happens mainly in the water between the village and Isla Cerralvo — and where mobulas gather in that density, orcas follow.

If your travel window falls between March and June, La Ventana is the departure point. Any other time of year, either departure is equally worthwhile.

### What the tour includes

- Departure from La Ventana or from La Paz (Muelle Fiscal) — your choice
- Small boat with a certified local captain
- Bilingual guide: marine biologist or Gulf of California wildlife specialist
- 5–6 hours in open water, actively looking for marine life
- Full snorkel gear: mask, snorkel, fins and life vest
- Snack at Isla Cerralvo or Playa Punta Arenas at the end
- Maximum of 6 people per boat

**Not included:** ground transport from La Paz to La Ventana (if you depart from La Ventana), guide gratuity, additional drinks.

**Duration:** 5–6 hours · **Departure:** 8:00 am · **Free cancellation** up to 24 hours before.

### What you need to know

**No specific sighting is guaranteed.** This is a wild ecosystem. What we do guarantee is a guide and captain who know where to look and how to make the most of every opportunity. If conditions make the trip unsafe, it is rescheduled.

**You need to be comfortable in the water.** Swimming with the animals means getting in and out of a small boat in open water and moving under your own power. Watching from the boat is suitable for everyone.

**Reef-safe sunscreen or a rashguard.** Conventional sunscreen is not allowed; a rashguard is the better option.

**Warm layers in winter.** From November to April, mornings on the water are cold — bring a jacket or windbreaker.

### Frequently asked questions

**How far is La Ventana from La Paz?**
About 40 minutes by road, southeast of the city.

**When is the best time for mobula rays?**
March through June, when they gather in large schools between La Ventana and Isla Cerralvo.

**Can I see whales on this trip?**
Humpback and blue whales pass through between November and March. Sightings are never guaranteed.

**Do I need to know how to swim?**
To enter the water, yes — you should be comfortable swimming in open water. Observing from the boat requires nothing.
