Balandra Beach 2026: Entry Fee, Reservations & Tips

Written by Rob | Jul 4, 2026 1:47:40 PM

Balandra Beach runs two entry shifts: 8:00 am–12:00 pm and 1:00 pm–5:00 pm. The official conservation wristband costs $120 MXN (about $6 USD) per person, and each shift is capped at 450 visitors. Book your spot through Mexico's official CONANP portal before you go. We're La Paz City Map, locals based in La Paz, and this guide walks you through exactly how to reserve your spot, what it costs, and when to visit for the best chance at seeing the famous mushroom rock, El Hongo, at its finest.

Why Balandra Beach has limited access

Balandra is a federally protected Flora and Fauna Area inside La Paz Bay, on the Gulf of California. CONANP, Mexico's national parks commission, caps the number of visitors to protect the shallow turquoise water and the fragile mushroom-shaped rock, El Hongo. The protection is working: in 2026, Balandra ranked number 8 on the World's Best 50 Beaches list, a global nod to how special this place is.

2026 shifts and visitor cap

Detail Info
Morning shift 8:00 am to 12:00 pm
Afternoon shift 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm
Cap per shift 450 visitors
Wristband price $120 MXN per person (about $6 USD)
Free entry La Paz residents with local ID, INAPAM seniors, kids under 12, people with disabilities

How to book your wristband, step by step

  1. Go to CONANP's official site: descubreanp.conanp.gob.mx.
  2. Select Baja California Sur, then choose Playa Balandra.
  3. Create your account and pick your date and shift.
  4. Pay online. It's secure and takes a few minutes.
  5. Save your QR code. That's your entry pass, valid for one day only.

Watch out for resellers. Only CONANP's official portal sells the wristband at $120 MXN. Independent websites sell a physical wristband for nearly double that price, with pickup at a nearby store. These sites are not run by the government and do not guarantee entry. Stick to the official portal.

Getting to Balandra from La Paz

Balandra sits about 25 kilometers (15 miles) from downtown La Paz, roughly a 30-minute drive along the Pichilingue highway. No car? Take the Playa Bus, run by Autobuses El Águila, from the Terminal Turística across from the La Paz waterfront (malecón). The fare is $70 MXN, the first bus leaves at 8:00 am, and return buses run every 45 minutes until 7:00 pm. There are no shops or restaurants inside the protected area, so bring water and food, and pack out every piece of trash. Balandra has no trash cans.

Prefer to drive yourself? You can rent a car in La Paz and reach Balandra on your own in about 30 minutes. Many Isla Espiritu Santo tours make a quick stop at Balandra, great if you just want the photo of El Hongo. If you'd rather relax on the beach without rushing, the Beach Hopper tour is the better call: it includes food and all the logistics, so all you have to do is enjoy.

Protected-area rules

  • No pets allowed.
  • Zero waste: everything you bring in, you take out.
  • Only biodegradable, oxybenzone-free sunscreen.
  • No single-use plastics.
  • Don't climb or touch El Hongo. It's fragile.
  • No vehicles inside the area. Walking trails only.

El Hongo and the tides: the detail most guides skip

Tides on the Gulf of California follow the moon. Every day brings two high tides and two low tides, with swings of up to two meters during a new or full moon. If you want to wade out to El Hongo with water at your knees instead of your chest, check a local tide chart the day before. Or better yet, come with a local guide who knows the exact window to cross dry.

Which shift should you pick?

The morning shift has softer light for photos and cooler temperatures. It's the shift locals prefer. The afternoon shift is easy to book online with your QR code. Weekdays are always quieter than weekends.

The stress-free way: go with locals

Prefer not to worry about the visitor cap? Our Beach Hopper tour includes guaranteed access to Balandra and Tecolote, round-trip transport from La Paz, and a local guide who knows the best viewpoints and the tide schedule. You just show up and enjoy the beach. [LINK -> Beach Hopper tour page]
