In Pichilingue, just 20 minutes from the La Paz malecón, an active coral nursery is run by marine biologists who cultivate coral fragments to restore the reefs of the Gulf of California. This isn't an aquarium or an artificial attraction — it's a real conservation project you can visit and snorkel over.
The water is calm, shallow, and perfect for every level, from first-timers to experienced snorkelers.
The coral nursery. Underwater structures where transplanted coral fragments grow, tended by local marine biologists. Seeing the restoration process up close is nothing like reading about it.
The tropical fish. Coral attracts life — angelfish, butterflyfish, and occasionally rays and sea turtles passing through the area.
Calm water. Unlike other snorkel spots around La Paz, Pichilingue has protected, shallow water — ideal if it's your first time snorkeling or you're traveling with kids.
The coral reefs of the Gulf of California have been under pressure from climate change and human activity. This nursery is part of an active restoration effort — every transplanted fragment is a step toward recovering the ecosystem.
Visiting isn't just tourism — it's directly supporting a local marine conservation project.
