##### Table of content

Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) is the easiest way to reach La Paz. From there, it's about 192 km (119 miles) along modern, well-paved Highway 19, and the direct drive takes 2.5 to 3 hours. You have four main ways to make the trip: bus, shared shuttle, rental car, or private transfer. Here's what each one actually costs and feels like, so you can pick the right one for your trip.

### Quick comparison

| Option | Price (one way) | Travel time | Best for |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Bus (Águila / ABC) | ~$20 USD per person | About 3 hours | Budget travelers |
| Shared shuttle | $40–$80 USD per person | 2.5–3.5 hours | Solo travelers, couples |
| Rental car | ~$50–$70 USD per day, plus one-way drop fee | 2.5–3 hours | Travelers who want to stop along the way |
| Private transfer | $160–$300 USD per vehicle (1–6 passengers) | 2.5–3 hours | Families and groups |

Prices are 2026 estimates and change by season and operator. Confirm exact fares when you book.

---

### Bus: the cheapest way to get to La Paz

Two companies, Águila and ABC, run several buses a day between the San José del Cabo terminal and La Paz's Central de Autobuses, near the Malecón. A one-way ticket costs around $20 USD, and the ride takes about three hours because the bus makes stops along the way.

This is the most affordable option, but seats are basic and buses can fill up during high season (November to April). Buy your ticket a day ahead if you can, especially around holidays.

### Shared shuttle: a comfortable middle ground

Shared shuttles pick up several passengers at the airport or at hotels and drop everyone off at set points in La Paz, often the Malecón or a central hotel. Expect to pay $40 to $80 USD per person, with a ride of 2.5 to 3.5 hours depending on how many stops your shuttle makes.

Shuttles are a good option if you're traveling alone or in a pair and don't want to deal with a rental car. Luggage is usually limited to one suitcase and one carry-on per person, so check the fine print if you're bringing gear for diving or snorkeling.

### Rental car: the most flexible option

Renting a car costs around $50 to $70 USD per day before insurance, and gives you the freedom to stop in Todos Santos, Cerritos Beach, or El Pescadero along the way. The drive itself takes 2.5 to 3 hours on Highway 19, a modern four-lane road.

Two things to know before you book: Mexican liability insurance is required by law and isn't covered by most credit cards or home policies, so budget for it separately. And if you're picking up in Los Cabos and dropping off in La Paz, a one-way fee usually applies — ask for the exact amount when you reserve, since it depends on the agency and the season.

### Private transfer: door-to-door with no stops

A private transfer picks you up at the airport or your hotel in Los Cabos and takes you straight to your address in La Paz, at the time you choose. Prices run $160 to $300 USD per vehicle, for up to six passengers, so splitting the cost among a group brings it close to shuttle prices per person, with a much shorter, more direct ride.

This is the best option if you're traveling with young kids, have an early or late flight, or simply want to skip the stops. Car seats are usually available on request, and some companies include a grocery stop if you ask in advance.

### Which option should you choose?

If you're on a tight budget and traveling light, the bus gets the job done for about $20. If you want a balance of price and comfort, a shared shuttle is a solid choice for solo travelers and couples. If you'd rather explore the coastline — Todos Santos, Cerritos Beach, the Sierra de la Laguna foothills — a rental car gives you that freedom. And if comfort and a direct door-to-door ride matter more than price, book a private transfer, especially if you're traveling as a family or group.

### Frequently asked questions

**Is there Uber between Los Cabos and La Paz?**
No. As of 2026, Uber does not operate in La Paz or elsewhere in Baja California Sur. Your options are bus, shuttle, rental car, or private transfer.

**Is the drive from Los Cabos to La Paz safe?**
Yes. Highway 19 is a modern, well-maintained road, and the route is considered safe for both rental cars and private transfers. As with any night driving in Baja, it's best to make the trip during daylight hours.

**Can I visit La Paz as a day trip from Los Cabos?**
Yes, though it makes for a long day. The direct drive is 2.5 to 3 hours each way. If you leave early, you'll have a few hours to walk the Malecón, see Balandra Beach, and grab lunch before heading back. A rental car or private transfer works best for a day trip, since the bus and shared shuttle take longer.

**What's the best way to reach Espíritu Santo or the whale sharks from Los Cabos?**
Espíritu Santo Island and the whale shark season (October to April) are both based out of La Paz, not Los Cabos, so you'll need to make this trip first. Most visitors book a rental car or private transfer so they can start their La Paz tours the same day they arrive.
